The BLACK Report: Teresa Jenee: Live @ Lola

Words by Corey Black
My first memory of hearing Teresa Jenee sing was when I was in the 2nd grade. She sang Bette Midler's "The Wind Beneath My Wings" at the school talent show. I can still remember the white dress she wore and the three fluffy ponytails in her hair. Fast forward some twenty plus years, and I am still hearing her voice. I am still remembering her outfits. I am still remember her hair. Her voice gets stronger and her presence more memorable every time she steps on stage. With this growth, more and more doors are opening up for this North St. Louis native. She was nominated for two 2010 Riverfront Times Awards (click here to vote) and at her performance at the RFT Music Showcase at Lola, it was evident why she was considered as a nominee. I can show you better than I can tell you.

The BLACK Report: A Romantic Invasion

Words by Corey Black
Being a spoken word artist in St. Louis, there is a vast assortment of open mics to partake in. I try my best not to over saturate myself and indulge too much, just so I don't wear out a good thing. Last night SoulStage invaded Shop Poetry at The Label, but that wasn't the only invasion that occurred that evening. Sitting on the patio underneath a moon lit sky, I realized that love had taken over. The love of art. The love of music. The love of romance. The ambiance was surreal. From the red lamps that anchored the bar area, to the faint breeze that danced across the canopy of the gazebo. Everything just felt right. In a secluded corner of the deck, I realized the importance of romance in a relationship, and how it should constantly play its role. Who knew a humid night in Downtown St. Louis could be so sultry?
